Day 5:

 This is the fifth day of my ten days tour.

Fear of writing was not the only thing that dogged me. I had also the fear of rejection. You see, the first ever books I published were commissioned. I was in Italy, and this young publisher wanted to create a sensation with publishing a book by a black African woman. I had written a film script which this young publisher thought would be a film hit. It was not! And the second book following that was not a hit either.

Many years later when I wrote my first book in the English language, trusting my past writing experience, I boldly sent my manuscript to traditional publishers and waited. One after the other rejections rolled in. I waited two years before I tried again. I revised and sent out more manuscripts to publishers. But after more rejections I decided to go it alone. This is where we are today! An Indie author was born. Every disappointment is a blessing! Believe me, this saying is true.

“You are a good man, Doctor Joe. In spite of my apparent unhappiness throughout this marriage, you still treated me well. I can never thank you enough, but I deserve to experience some happiness—the kind you experienced with me; the kind that made you ignore every bad thing I did, and you still smiled and treated me and everyone else with kindness. I’m not a bad person. Life just threw me a bad curve. I can’t even blame my father anymore. Only God will judge him.” She turned to us as if to plead. “Kids, I hope you will understand.”

“Your mother was treated very badly,” Papa said. “And I was instrumental in it. I thought that if I loved her as hard as I did, she would forgive me for snatching her away. It was I who bribed your father to behave as he did. You must forgive him. The fact that I was a doctor, and Obinna was just a fledgling young man looking to find his feet, sealed the deal.” He looked at Ma. “I stole you right from under his nose. I thought that marrying you was my victory, but I didn’t win. I had no idea how deeply you two felt for each other …. and for that, I am sorry.”

Obinna had said nothing all this while. He quietly listened to Papa confessing his sins. In the end, Mama wished us well and left with Obinna.

About the Author

Joy Nwosu Lo-Bamijoko

 Joy has written and published extensively on national and international scholarly                     journals, magazines, and newspapers. 

Her first short story I Come from Utopia was published in African Voices, Spring/                        Summer, 2007, pg. 18. Since then, she has published numerous others in RAVE SOUP FOR THE WRITER’S SOUL Anthology, Vols. 1 & 2.

Highlighted Poems from Songs of Marriage: Rowing a Boat and I Love You

The first fifteen years of my education career, I taught in the classroom. Even though I had a preliminary education administrative credential, I didn’t have the emotional strength to seek an administrative position because of the stress from the earlier relationship. After marrying my husband Lynton, with his support beyond my expectation, I went back to school. I received a permanent education administrative credential and a Doctorate of Education degree. During the three years of my study, he watched TV with headphone so that no sound would interrupt my study. The first year of school, I accepted the promotion of an administrative position and held that for ten years before my retirement.

 

Rowing a Boat

I love to go rowing a boat,
weather is not the matter,
the day may be sunny or cloudy,
windy or even stormy.
Having you in the same boat,
I can go anywhere, everywhere.
We had a rough day at the sea,
almost dangerous to manage.
Our hearts were in touch,
hands were in sync,
same spirit, and same strength.
Your encouraging words to me, mine to you,
all the way through.
We strove until the storm passed,
a day I will forever remember,
the storm brought us closer.
I love to go rowing a boat
when you are with me.

 

I Love You

Hugging in the morning,
kissing at night;
saying I love you before
saying good night.
Praying that was not
the last chance
being together
alive.

About the Author

Miriam Hurdle is a multi-genre writer. She writes poetry, flash fiction, and short stories and memoir. Her poems are included in Letters to Gaia, Whispers and Echoes Issue 2, Whispers and Echoes Issue 3, and Outcast and More Words.

She is passionate about poetry and her favorite poets are Robert Frost with his poems “The Road Not Taken,” and Linda Pastan with her poem “To a Daughter Leaving Home.”

 

She is a member of PoemHunter.com, and her poetry may be read on the websites.

Music has rooted in her life. Being a soloist as a teenager led her to taking voice lessons and to have ongoing singing engagements. She continues to sing soprano in choral groups. Lyrics have a major influence in the natural flow of her melodic writing. She writes memoir in the form of poetry.

Along with her brother, she took photos when the films were black and white. Photography is still her enjoyable hobby. Drawing and painting were fun activities as a child. Her favorite was to draw a Japanese girl with big eyes, long hair, small lips and chin. She resumed drawing and watercolor painting several years ago. In her poetry collection, photos and paintings are included to illustrate the poems.

She earned a Doctorate of Education from the University of La Verne in California. After two years of rehabilitation counseling, fifteen years of public-school teaching and ten years in school district administration, she retired and enjoys life with her husband in southern California.

Why I wrote – The Truth Will Set You Free

This short story is a chapter from A Harem Boy’s Saga – II – Unbridled; a memoir by Young, the sequel to A Harem Boy’s Saga – I – Initiation. It is base on my personal experience during my Malaysian school years with a fellow female student, Dorothy from a different institution. Little did she know that I am gay. This story happened at Dorothy’s Valentine’s Day party where she pursued me relentlessly to be her beau. Without divuldging too much, our relationship ended poorly. Although my experience is not unique, I am sure it happens quite frequently to many gays and lesbians in the LGBTQ community.

…After a series of invigorating dances with the party twins, I was ready to call it a night, but under Dorothy’s insistence, I stayed. Nobody at the party knew of my sexual inclinations except me. During a slow dance, Dorothy leaned her head against my chest. Although this intimate way of dancing was not new to me, I had no intention of leading my friend on. I tried to keep a polite distance. Dot, thought me shy and continued her aggressive approach. I had little choice but to go with the flow since she held me tight with no intention of letting me leave anytime soon. The moment arrived when her lips almost touched mine. She looked into my “eyes wide shut,” and expected romance to sparkle between us. I did not back away  even though I did not feel the same as Dot. Since it was Valentine’s Day, I did not wish to upset her. I play-acted, as much as I could. In my mind, it was the correct thing to do. After all, I will be back to London in a week and would not be seeing my Malaysian friends for another year. To me, this was merely a moment in time to make my female friend feel good about herself.

This morning I was talking to a writing pal. We had a passionate talk about visionary fiction changing your life one story at a time. We got into how hard change can be and how stories help us so much. Getting into the characters and the dramatic thrill of the narrative gets the literary blood boiling. In metaphysical thrillers, with dreams and natural magic, we’re propelled into transformation in a desperate person’s life. Once we finish the story, our head shifts and attitudes get realigned.  Unconsciously, we go about the business of making practical changes without realizing we’re doing it. Stories affect us in a very, very big way.

A Big Welcome to Mary Adler, #RRBC Spotlight Author for January!

WORKING SMART: PART ONE

 

CHARACTER BIBLE

There are so many things for a writer to worry about when writing a novel. Plot, dialogue, characterization, conflict, style. Do all the characters names start with the same initial? Were Jimmy’s eyes blue or brown?

To make the most of the time spent toiling at the computer, many authors create time-saving aids to make the book building process go more smoothly. I do several things as I write my first draft.

Character Descriptions: I don’t write long backstories for my characters, but I do note their physical characteristics, speech peculiarities, and other specific details about them including their birth dates and affiliations in a character bible. I also pin up photos from magazines when I find someone who looks the way I think my character should look. For example, this is a photo of a model who represents Paola Buonarotti.

And this is a photo of Oliver’s German shepherd, Harley.

I always know what color my characters’ eyes are, who is related to whom, and who hates fish.

It is also useful to keep a record – perhaps in a spreadsheet – of the first time a character appears or is mentioned. It may seem unnecessary, but when you begin revisions and start moving events around in the manuscript, it is helpful to have a record of what happens when and who was where.

Names: For some reason, I am drawn to names that begin with “L”. So, my first book has Luca and Lucy and Louis. To me, they are completely dissimilar names. (I am not so sure that the reader makes that distinction.) As I wrote the second book, I was more careful and kept a tally under the letters of the alphabet. (For their fans, Luca, Lucy, and Louis are still there.)

If you are looking for names that were popular in a given time period, you can find them easily on-line. Mary was the most popular girl’s name from 1800 until 1961. In 2011 it was 112th.  (When I hear the name Mary, I assume the person is of a certain age – like me! According to The Atlantic, modern parents want their children to have names that underline their individuality. Hmmm.)

Son of the Serpent is the 2nd volume and 3rd book in the Fantasy Angels Series, but all the books in the series are standalone novels. This book is a High Fantasy sprinkled with Romance and Horror aimed at an adult audience. Although there are scenes in the book loosely based on stories from the bible and Jewish scriptures this is not a religious book. This book is a combination of legends, folklore, and mythology intertwined into an original plot, with distinctive characters and extraordinary fantasy world-building.
